Portfolio of Brickwork in Shropshire
Here is a small selection of our more recent projects:
Shrewsbury Flower Show
Bobby Thomas was responsible for building the sandstone brickwork on one of the key show gardens at Shrewsbury Flower Show.
The brick walls for the show garden were built using sandstone brick and were put together using a traditional lime mix.
The completed show garden was one of the public's favorites and was judged by TV presenter Chris Beardshaw. The quality of the bricklaying was remarked upon by the judges.

Garden Wall - Foxholes, Near Wem, Shropshire
This bricklaying project required a long low decorative wall to match in with both the property and the new slabs.
A brick was chosen and the footing installed on Day 1. The 9" wall was then built leaving two 4' entrances. Between the entrances and the straight sections, a perfect semi-circular section of wall was built.
The wall was then finished off with solid blue bricks and blue pier caps. Notice the quality of the pointing between the solid blue header bricks.

Small Brick Wall and Steps - Hadley, Telford
This small 4 inch wall defines the two levels of the garden and adds interest to the garden. On 4 inch walls, coping stones such as these are generally used. The steps were finished in the same slabs as the patio and path.

Sloping Garden Wall - Wellington, Telford
This brick wall demonstrates one way of dealing with sloping ground. The wall can either be tiered or as in this bricklaying example built in Wellington it can be sloped. Watch out for cowboy builders, there are plenty around. Shropshire Garden Design Ltd only uses experienced bricklayers and the quality of our work speaks for itself.

Garden Walling - Shrewsbury
This project involved firstly completely clearing the garden of everything, i.e. slabs, turf, concrete and garden shed.
We then laid and compacted a bed of hardcore. Footings were then laid for the walls which were then built to become raised borders.
Finally, setts were laid between the raised borders to finish off the project.
The photos below represent the 'Before' and 'After' shots.

Multi Coloured Brick Walling - Newport
The brickwork of this property had very distinctive brickwork made up of five different types of brick. We found out exactly what bricks had been used for the house, sourced the bricks, and built their new garden wall to match perfectly with the house.

Strong 9" Retaining Wall - Madeley, Telford
A full 9 inch brick wall was used here to retain the soil behind the new patio. Header bricks were used to finish off the top of the wall.
Note the bricklaying was carried out in the middle of Winter. As long as the correct precautions against blistering are taken, there is no reason why brickwork cannot be done throughout the year.

Large Boundary Wall - The Four Crosses, Shropshire
This required the continuation of an existing brick wall to create a large boundary wall separating the car park from the main road. Notice the quality of the brickwork, excellent bricklaying.

Brick Retaining Wall and Steps - Cleobury Mortimer
This 12 metre long brick wall curves into the central flight of steps. A 9 inch brick wall (double brick thickness) such as this one is necessary if the wall is being used to retain material behind it.
Red engineering bricks were used for the main structure with 4 inch breeze blocks behind the facing brick (for added strength), and charcoal bricks were used as header bricks to match in with the brickwork of the house.

4" Decorative Brick Wall - Hadley, Telford
This garden had a gentle slope but the customer wanted a flat decking area. Therefore we tiered the garden into two levels and built a small brick retaining wall. As well as using coping we also built small pillars and finished them with pier caps.

Brick Arch - Loppington, Shropshire
This project required a separating brick wall to be demolished and replaced with a brick arch allowing easier access to the rest of the garden.
A timber template was used to create the perfect arch.
Reclaimed bricks were used to match in with the period property.
The finished result was an arch which looked as if it had been there since the property was built. The owners were delighted with the result.

Chimney Restoration - Roddington, Shropshire
This project required the partial rebuilding of a large chimney on a house in Roddington.
The corbelling at the top of the chimney was rebuilt and the rest of the chimney was raked out and pointed.
Scaffolding was erected to gain safe access to the chimney.

Sandstone Brick Walling - Childs Ercall
This brick wall uses Bradstone natural sandstone walling. Every brick is a different size and shape and therefore the mortar joints will never be even and are not meant to be.
This is a natural material, and quite expensive but looks fantastic when built.
Shropshire Garden Design used this walling product for this year's show garden at Shrewsbury Flower Show and the bricklaying was a hit with the judges and public alike.

Sandstone Block Wall - Poynton Green, Shropshire
This old sandstone wall was rebuilt from the ground up using some of the existing stone but also matching some new sandstone in with it.
The result is that it is difficult to tell the difference between original sandstone and the stone.
The coping stones are actually precast mouldings that we had made to order to precisely match the dimensions of the original sandstone coping which had crumbled over the years.

Yorkstone Brick Walling - Leegomery, Telford
As well as garden/retaining walls, we can also build barbecues or indeed any structure you require. This Stonemarket Yorkstone walling is available in a variety of sizes and colours and is very versatile and hard-wearing.
It does not take long to build a barbecue such as this one but bear in mind the walling blocks are a lot more expensive than conventional engineering bricks.

Outdoor Step - Donnington, Telford
As well as a full range of brickwork services, we can also lay patios and block paving. No job is too small as can be seen here.
This 2-tier arced step uses Bradstone Rumbled setts and charcoal kerbs.
